I know we're talking about different products here, yet want to share the experience of a good friend of mine. He recently wanted to upgrade his WD MyBook Duo "personal NAS" from 2x2 TB to 2x4 TB HDDs, in "maximum capacity" mode. As it turns out you can not do this. The drives fit just fine and are recognized as 4 TB units, but since the NAS was delivered with 4 TB capacity they don't allow any anything larger than this. He could go for 4 TB mirrored, but that's not what wants / needs.

The WD support just said "it's configured this way, can't do anything". From my point of view that's ridiculous: the size of a storage system is just a simple parameter (unless you cross a few specific boundaries, which is not the case here)! It's obvious they want to sell him another MyBook Duo if he wants larger capacity, yet won't get any more money from him.
