Coming here for 15+years, still my first stop for quality product reviews. Thank you everyone at AnandTech. Here's to another 20!
  • CaedenV - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I started reading Anandtech back in 2000 when I was starting to build my first PC for college video editing. Between Anandtech and Tom's Hardware I built a great little rig far cheaper than what my college suggested for an editing build. Sadly Tom's is no longer relivant and has not aged well, but Anandtech is still a fantastic site that I check almost every day!

Congrats on 20 years! Heres to 20 more!
  • shadarlo - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Almost the same for me! I read both sites religiously back then. Toms has been fairly useless for years unfortunately, but Anandtech continues to be a good read. Just wish there were more reviews, especially of low-end/middle-end mobile tech. And especially more news would be nice... have had to turn to engadget more and more for tech news.
  • Gasaraki88 - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Actually TomsHardware is pretty good nowadays. I started to read them again last year.
  • mazz7 - Friday, April 28, 2017 - link

yeah since purch get Toms its getting better now :)
  • nathanddrews - Thursday, April 27, 2017 - link

First AT review I ever read was for the GeForce 256 DDR. I think I had a Fury Pro at the time and was debating between the Fury Maxx and the GeForce 256 DDR. I ended up buying a 64MB version and loved it. UT99 forever!!!

Wow, basically the same story for me, and year. I'm with you, great site, still my first place to go for a quality review.
  • Omega215D - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Yup. I started building my own PC back in 2001 and trusted the reviews of GPUs and CPUs along with MaximumPC's. Those were the days when building and configuring was a bit more involved than it is today and each gen brought massive improvements.
  • just4U - Monday, May 1, 2017 - link

I would say it's more involved today simply because of the cosmetic features... Wiring and such (unless you were anal as hell back then..) was not as meticulous as it is today. Part selection(s) are still just as involved.. but maybe not as interesting due to the fact that advances are sideways and in small increments today whereas they were leaps and bounds 10-15 & 20 years ago.

    Happy 20th!

Next year let's have a drink together :)

For Canada, the laws about giveaways are perfectly simple. You just include the phrase "excluding Quebec" and you don't have to worry about anything else.

  • surfnaround - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

    So true... LOL
  • HexiumVII - Friday, April 28, 2017 - link

    wow
  • surfnaround - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

BTW, that anandtech founders room (basement?) is geek cred right there!
  • phoenix_rizzen - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

You also have to include a "skill-testing question" to make it a reward (and thus non-taxable) and not a freebie (or something along those lines). Usually a simple math question involving all 4 operations (+ - * /) and single-digit numbers. :)
  • simonm - Thursday, April 27, 2017 - link

I think that's the same in Australia. I don't understand it. It's so dumb and sux when there are awesome giveaways like this.

If you really want to enter I guess you'll need to know someone in the US who could forward on or maybe use a forwarding company that exist for situations like this.
  • Holliday75 - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I still think we should exclude Canada. *ssssshhhhh don't tell the Canadians this so we have better odds*
  • Makaveli - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

lol that is my first question is this US only. As a Canadian that has been reading the site since 2001 most of your give away are not for us canucks :(
  • MajGenRelativity - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I've only been reading here for about a year, but this is the most detailed site I've been to that covers everything. Thank you so much, and keep up the good work!
  • Fritzo - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Been around since the beginning and still pop over from time to time. Happy 20th! In Internet years, that's like 350 years old :D
  • cheinonen - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

During my computer architecture class in college, where we learn about processors, bus interfaces, memory, etc... our professor made the comment that we should just read AnandTech for all the details since our book would already be out of date. Of course, I was already reading it at that point, and building my own computers, and after a couple of days, I just challenged the class so I didn't have to go anymore.

At that point, I never expected I'd wind up writing for AnandTech later, but I did, and it was a wonderful experience, and of course, I still read it daily today.
  • SSNSeawolf - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I'm not sure why you left AnandTech but I do miss your display articles. A real shame and still a gap in their otherwise well-rounded coverage.
  • cheinonen - Thursday, April 27, 2017 - link

My leaving had nothing to do with AnandTech. I was freelancing back then, writing for multiple sites, while my kids were really young and I was the stay-at-home Dad. Once they were old enough to be in school full time, The Wirecutter wanted me to come on full time so I did that and just didn't have the bandwidth to do displays still for AnandTech. I often wish I could still do them, though, as display tech right now is getting really exciting again for the first time in a while.
  • Ryan Smith - Thursday, April 27, 2017 - link

The amusing part is that I did pretty much the same thing. I told the professor about AnandTech, and we essentially threw out the book on computer organization. ISA and southbridges connected via PCI were were and dead by that time.
  • cheinonen - Thursday, April 27, 2017 - link

Yeah, this was when Athlon was just coming out and we were overclocking our Celeron 300A's to 450MHz because pencil lead could connect the pins together. I have no idea how boring that class would have been if I didn't test out of it.
  • Ej24 - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Crazy to think it's been so long. Anand actually grew up not far from me. We even went to rival high schools. And I still remember the early days of Anandtech. I'm glad it's still in good form even after being acquired. I look forward to the future tech news and reviews.
  • Despoiler - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Congratulations! I've been on here for some time and keep coming back for the quality articles and forum debate. Here's to 20 more!
  • Ampidire - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I have been only coming to Anandtech for a mere 5 years, but I wanted to say and congratulate all of you who make my decisions of buying technology a lot more easier, with your in depth and comprehensive reviews. The site has been growing and I'm very happy to be a part of a big community. THANK YOU and HAPPY 20 ANAND TECH!

That's a picture of an ASUS P2B, isn't it? I actually reread your Celeron 300A piece again not long ago ...

Well just reading what is on the MB it's a ASUS K7V which makes it a Slot A AMD board rather than a Slot 1 Intel board.

  • ET - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

A hearty congratulations on Anandtech's 20th anniversary. I'm looking forward to a lot more years. Been here probably from the start, I'm guessing. My memory isn't that great, but according to my forum profile page I registered on October 1999. And thank you Anandtech for letting me keep the two letter username I signed up with when websites still allowed that. This way I might feel old, but at least I feel privileged for being old. :)
  • Arbie - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

  • Drumsticks - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Congratulations Anandtech! I've only been here for about six years but it was the first place I found and it's still the first place I go to for reliable news. I remember reading the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture and I think it was your excellent coverage of technology that led me to join the industry. Here's to another 20 years!
  • Drumsticks - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Thought I might add, y'all should continue serving old historically relevant articles/pieces of tech that you covered! Maybe one article for every year? I love those historical pieces.
  • kerovon - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I have a 5 year old desktop that I've been intending to rebuild and upgrade this year, and this looks like a great opportunity. Congratulations on your 20 years.
  • tappertrainman_i - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Anandtech is still my first stop for tech news and reviews, been reading for at least 10-15 years and haven't noticed a drop in quality at all since Anand left. Thank you all!

    Awesome
  • Shadowmaster625 - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

  • lmcd - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Funny how these posts bring everyone out of the woods :) Looks like Anandtech's comment section has Ryzen again!
  • TETRONG - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

Thank you Ryan, Anand, Ian.. truly special what you've created here.

I always come to the forums for great advise on computer issues, I always I find what I need. The reviews here help me pick the best components for my budget.
  • xenios - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I dare say I've been reading Anandtech since the first days, when sites likes this were far and between.
Still coming back to it, but admittedly mow as much as back then when I visited on every single day.
  • neon - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

This is such a nice article. My favorite Anand memory is listening to him and Kyle at the hardware workshop at QuakeCon 2003. Anandtech has been a solid provider of clear information for 20. May that quality continue ever onwards.
  • Vyvian07 - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

20 Years is an amazing accomplishment these days! =) Nice work!
  • Akkuma - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I've been here since at least 2003 and funny enough I know someone who went to high school with Anand.

This site has always been my go to where I can be sure the reviews are generally fair and well done. I do think the quality of the site went down after the Purch purchase, less reviews in general, less roundups with the last one being 7/6/2015 according to the search, less timely reviews on many things, a weak commenting system with basic functionality still missing, but the quality of the individual reviews themselves seems to still be high.
  • ratte - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

3dFx, Abit, that brings back memories.
I bought the Diamond Monster after Anands review, and how great that was coupled with my Matrox Millenium.
    Those were the days.
Thanks for all the great reviews during the first 20.
  • asfletch - Thursday, April 27, 2017 - link

Ah, the Matrox Millennium - a true connoisseur's card ;) These posts make me feel so old (1st mid-tower build was in 1996 I think - before AT even came online)!

Happy 20th from Australia and thanks for the info I can't get anywhere else y'all.
  • ET - Thursday, April 27, 2017 - link

Yeah, that Matrox. Then again, nobody would dare admit buying a Matrox Mistake. :)

Times have changed, a decade has passed for me browsing and reading articles on anandtech. I started reading the website back in 2006 and this has been the one place for the very best on hardware. Every build I made for friends, clients, etc anandtech had a role to play. Thank you and congratulations for all that you have done. Here's to the next 20 years.
  • BigT383 - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

How do I enter the giveaway??
  • versesuvius - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

A glance at the comments and I think that I am the oldest reader of Anandtech. If I remember correctly I started reading AT before Anand Shimpi started using "we" instead of "I".

Congratulations AnandTech for making it to your 20th year. It has been nice, entertaining and informative and balanced as always. Speaking of which I cannot but fault you for an imbalance right in this article. As for the giveaway, you only point out the problems you have with other countries' laws when trying to gift someone with a giveaway. You miss the countries who do not have any laws or regulations that prevent you or make it hard for you to send a gift to. And they are the ones that the the American government prohibits you to send anything to even if it is paid for let alone a gift. You completely missed us. Give us some credit there. Won't you? Or is that forbidden too? :)
  • fastman696 - Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - link

I started with Anandtech from his beginning in 1998 or 99 after a few site crashes and knew of his youth and learned a lot from this place. The forums were very helpful and informative as computers were new in those days to the masses. The forums have waned the last few years but it is up to us to police ourselves better and ignore the trolls, let the mods deal with them. Anand has moved on to new journeys and is missed. I retired this month and am moving to Italy but computers will continue to be a fun hobby and I will be around. Thanks all :)

"more reviews, more news, and more articles discussing how things work and how the future will be shaped"

That's music to my ears. The past few years AT has become a bit of AT-light in comparison to 5 years ago... which has made me a new user and fan of PC Perspective, Techspot or ArsTechnica. More philosophical articles that are not purely news, but perspectives on how tech has changed from your perspective as reviewers - and great ones at that - or where you think the market/tech is going, that would be very, very, VERY welcome.

I started a local shop back in 1996 back in my hometown. I found Anandtech only a few months after he launched his tech page, and prior to his domain. It was the only source I could find for information on motherboards that was not marketing material I was being sent. Beat the heck out of the trade journals for telling me what I needed to know.

That shop and the start that Anandtech (and later, Tom's Hardware) gave me the background needed to eventually launch an engineering career at Microsoft (working on the kernel with ACPI) and Amazon (working on the Kindle and now something I can't speak about). What I got from Anand (and Tom in the early days) was not just the knowledge of what was a good board or CPU, but the verbiage needed to speak intelligently in an interview process with a major tech company, and the insight to ask good questions, which is key during a high level interview.

Thanks for the assistance, and good luck to the current caretakers!

I have been visiting AnandTech for many years. Probably 15, maybe more. It is part of my daily routine.

I often refer people to this site, and love to provide links to articles here when I post on other forums.

In addition to the detailed reviews, I always enjoyed then the writers reveal their personal bias on hardware, and clearly distinguish between a personal preference and a benchmark result. I think it adds to the credibility and also makes it more interesting.

I also enjoy the behind-the-scenes articles, such as interviews with industry leaders and tours of manufacturing sites. The "technology" explanations are also well-done.

Great job, and best wishes on your next 20 years.

While I find the arguments for keeping the giveaways US-only rather thin (Tom's Hardware is also owned by Purch, and regularly does worldwide giveaways), in the end I probably wouldn't win any way. As such: good luck to all of you!

And last but not least: thank you to everyone at AT - the quality, depth and nuance of your coverage is still second to none. My only wish is for more!

I have been reading since my first year at NC State where I custom built a computer based on no knowledge but what I could learn from this site and the teensie bit I knew from playing around on Mac OS 9 on my dad's computer in high school. I truly appreciate the wide ranging interests covered from digital imaging to transistor level computer circuitry and phone specs. This site has grown in breadth of coverage and perspective as my technology needs have matured. I have referred many associates to this site in the interest of them learning a bit more of what goes on under the hood. Thanks for keeping the values and priorities that attracted me to your site when I was just a tech neophyte while an undergrad.

Congratulations to all the crew at AT, especially Ryan and Ian.

Anand, if you are reading this, we miss you! And thank you for everything.

Been an AT reader for over 12 years, and I still think the HTC One M7 review, and Brian and Anand's podcast about it, are my absolute favourite moments of purely enjoying AnandTech.

More reviews and more news sounds great. Also I truly think your mobile reviews need a fresh look and a new direction that aligns more with how people use their mobile phones in day to day. I'd start with a bit more attention to audio quality, and some standardisation of the camera tests.

Thanks again Anandtech for all of your hard work, time, dedication, and knowledgeable expertise over the course of the last 20 years. I'm sure I'm saying this for millions of viewers of the site. Congratulations on your 20 year anniversary and best wishes to all of you.

AnandTech has earned a reputation in my eyes as the best tech review website on the web. The quantitative analysis and deep dives provide a level of information that is second to none. Congratulations on 20 years and I hope there are many more to come.

PS We miss you, Anand and Brian!

What do I get for guessing the interfaces?

Top I/O block, left to right: Yellow is joystick/MIDI, almost certainly has line in, line out, and microphone minijacks underneath it. Pink is DB-25 parallel port, underneath is a pair of DA-9 serial ports. Next to that is a pair of USB 1.1 ports. Next to that is the paired keyboard/mouse PS/2 ports.

In the space between the slots and the back of the board are some audio plugs, for connecting to CD-ROM, front-panel headphone/microphone, etc.

The slots are, from left to right: AMR (possibly CNR,) 3x 32-bit conventional PCI, AGP Pro, universal voltage. Perpendicular to those, the CPU slot is a Slot-A, the original Athlon slot.

Three PC-133 SDRAM slots. parallel with the CPU slot

Underneath the RAM is the standard 20-pin ATX power header. Ah, the days before 4-pin CPU power headers...

Far left is a white jumper block for the front panel controls.

At bottom is a partly cut off blue ATA/ATAPI (Probably "UDMA 100", could be UDMA 133, I don't recall precisely for that chipset.) There is almost certainly another ATA/ATAPI port and a floppy port on there, probably cut off in the photo.
  • Ryan Smith - Thursday, April 27, 2017 - link

You get my amazement. When I had thrown up that picture, I was expecting most people to think it was a Slot-1 board. Instead you got it right and really did name all of the interfaces. Well done! (Are you sure you don't work for AnandTech?)

Happy Birthday, AnandTech! I've been with you guys for 7 years now and I'm still just as impressed by your content as I was after I read my first article - the combination of depth and accessibility you provide is unprecedented. It think it's fair to say that some of the artistic flavor of Anand's writing left with him - I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the melancholic and often reflective way he opened his articles; and also his objective love of Apple. Despite whether you were interested in Apple, it was an experience to read his take on their products. He had the ability to be both enthusiastic about and critical of something he apparently loved. Nowadays, AnandTech's Apple reviews are just as deep, albeit a bit late, but you can tell they weren't written by an Apple enthusiast, which makes them a bit less exciting.

The best of luck with reaching your goals about creating more content - that would be very much welcome. It would be great if you could review more products from the bustling Chinese industry from any end of the price spectrum - Chuwi's tablets, for example, look promising.

On a side note, it's a bit disappointing that you weren't able to at least offer giveaways for the EU - it can't be that difficult, and I'm sure fans would be willing to pay for any additional charges there may be.

I have been reading AnandTech for over 15 years and find this site the best for how I like my information/tech. Love love love the fact that the first giveaway is a Ryzen chip. My own systems and many I've built for family and friends have all been AMD powered. I've been holding off upgrading from my APU system for the next generation and I'm ready to jump into it. Just waiting for the ITX boards to come out and it's play time. Would live to start my new system off with a 20 anniversary gift from AnandTech and AMD.

Call me another hater, but I will add my voice who are calling out S8's gimmicky and impractical exterior design. The curved screen edges mean that the image will be distorted at the boundaries. The curved screen and a glass back means that the grip without an external case will be poor and it will be easy to register false input while simply trying to hold the phone. The curved screen edges make using an external case on this phone very clumsy and impractical. The edge of the phone that has a case still is not protected from the impacts as you can't cover the viewable screen estate at the edges.

The QHD screen is another gimmick that will mostly result in increased battery drain without obvious benefits. You can reduce the resolution, but that will actually look less accurate than displaying the same image on a true FHD screen because the pixels of the QHD screen will not align with the pixels that should have been on a FHD screen. It has been pretty much the rule of thumb that you want to run the LCDs at their native resolution because of this.

And what else can I say? This device will come loaded with Samsung and carrier crap, resulting in 200+ pre-installed apps on a new device, which will take up storage, CPU cycles, and drain the battery faster.

Because of these arguments, the Pixel family and the Oneplus 3T are still the best high end Android smartphones because they come with relatively lean ROMs, and carrier-indenpendent unlocked editions of Pixel are available.

From the article: "However for our many international readers, I need to apologize. We’ve not been able to do international giveaways, and the 20th anniversary giveaway is no different."
    ---

(chuckle..) some things never change! One can get free things to give away from around the globe but giving them out? Not so much.. (Canadian here)

But than again, I never came to this site because it had giveaways..but I've been a member for most of those 20 years.. Ah 97... StarCraft, learning to build computers, and being hit on by the cougars on the 25something channel at Westwood. Good times! :)

ICQ was big, Twitter was not! I don't think I started coming here until after i'd been at tom's for a bit though... so I'm guessing it was between 99-2001 when getting into some of the top spots at Mad Onion sorta required a little bit of computer knowhow. I was still a relative newbie in 97 and still paying to get my computers fixed.

I used to read AnandTech articles all the time (along with toms hardware) when I had free time. I haven't been back in a while but it brings back great memories of building my first pc and constantly checking articles to make sure I was doing it correctly. Looks like AnandTech is still a great place for quality reviews and articles. Great job to everyone at AnandTech.

  • m0biusace - Thursday, May 4, 2017 - link

This site has been at the top of my bookmarks since the early 2000s -- I still visit it daily. The depth of your reporting and reviews is refreshing. You guys are definitely living up to your goals!
  • azrael- - Friday, May 5, 2017 - link

First of all, congrats on the 20 year anniversary. I've been there (as in: visiting Anandtech) pretty much from the beginning and I intend to keep doing it for the foreseeable future.

With that said, I'm astonished/appalled/annoyed/sickened/outraged/<insert any other similarly negative emotion> that not even for your 20th anniversary you've figured out how to do international giveaways.

And no, another apology doesn't quite cut it. You should instead figure out a way to accomplish what pretty much every other site out there seems to be able to.

As you've stated you're part of a large organization. I'm sure someone there should be able to figure something out, but of course it's much easier to constantly snub your international readers.

Sorry for venting, but I'm getting tired of these lame excuses.

Keeping up a website is no joke.
Great will and drtermination is required and you have shown all of it!
    Respect.
  • stevenoz - Sunday, May 7, 2017 - link

When I need motherboard-load of hardware info... this is where I come. Happy Anniversary... and I wish all of you at Anandtech many more years online.
  • Xanterra - Sunday, May 7, 2017 - link

Been reading your site for 8+ years - love the site. Best of luck - here's hoping you can continue to provide the same quality for many years to come.

Speaking of which, I use adblock and although I am afraid that's non-negotiable, I would be happy to pay a subscription to help support Anandtech. I do know some sites use Patreon whereas others have integrated "premium" features like flair next to users' comments, but honestly I don't care. I'd be happy to help pay for Anandtech even if I got nothing out of it (similar to public radio).
It would be amazing if you offered a way to do so.
  • Phiro69 - Monday, May 8, 2017 - link

I noticed that on Day 9 the Gleam contest entry box no longer allows you to type in your twitter ID if you already follow anandtech, you *have* to allow them access to Twitter and give them tremendous abilities (post tweets for you? Why would they need that?)

I love Anandtech, but I'm not giving out those permissions even for a giveaway like your 20th, so there's one less entry going forward from me. Partnering with a company like Gleam that overreaches unnecessarily so they can make a buck off your users was a crap move. Come on, Anandtech/Ryan Smith.
  • mypg0306 - Monday, May 8, 2017 - link

Anadtech is the best tech web with deep in depth review I like it most. it's the first time I join this giveaway, hope ican win! cheers.

  • Glenn - Monday, May 15, 2017 - link

I don't get here as often as I used to Anand, but I have been an avid fan since day 1. I was a novice when I first came, learned so much here I eventually opened my own computer business that was so successful I was able to retire a few years ago and start spending more time playing golf. :-) Thanks for all you've done Anand and I'm sure for all you will continue to do! I'll still check in to update on the newer tech occasionally but I'm working hard on how to make birdies now. Take Care

I remember way back in the late 90's or so-I couldn't afford the new Dell I wanted, so I started reading Anandtech for tips about building my own computer. I still remember crossing my fingers and booting that machine the first time...hearing the beep and seeing the windows splash for the first time. I was hooked! Still build my own. Thanks for all the help over the years Anandtech!
  • Tamale - Wednesday, June 14, 2017 - link
