Given the fact that the typical user for this product will not render videos on it, it will be just fine. There is enough thermal headroom for short bursts, so it will feel fast.
And you can just pull these facts from your arse? Some of us would like to see benchmarks indicating this package can keep burst rates over time, rather then just for 5 minutes. It is very possible for a thermal package to suck so bad that small bursts are impossible once the machine heats up.
This laptop has measly 35Wh battery. Japanese batty rating (and their car mileage rating) is totally ridiculous - I remember they measure how long the laptop at lowest brightness doing nothing or so..
Sadly it seems these shitty laptop makers are still stuck in 2005. Even Dells new xps 13 starts at 4gb and that's a f****ing 1000$ laptop.
I was considering one but realized the new xps 13 with 16gb ram costs $2000 after taxes. Eff that BS. They won't see my money with this kind of dropping feature set. Intentionally gimping their skus to leach out another $500 for $10 worth of extra ram.
Some manufacturers use space constraints as a reason to exclude a USB-A connector from their thin and light devices, but Vaio went ahead and threw in a VGA port! Crazy.
Honestly seems like a waste. I feel like everyone has switched to HDMI at this point. I would like if this had a second USB C. But I might be in the minority there.
You've clearly never been into a Japanese meeting room. They still have fax machines. Their previous head of cybersecurity claimed to have never used a computer...
Hinge design looks interesting, but I wonder how the stress of heavy typists will impact the system over a typical office lifespan. Also agree with others that 8GB (if there is no possible aftermarket upgrade) could be a limiting factor where longevity is concerned. Aside from that, the plethora of ports is always welcome on a smaller laptop. I question the wisdom/necessity of VGA, but if this is targeting the Japanese market, there might be a good reason for it that someone on the other side of the planet isn't aware of.
It'll probably be much cheaper in the US. Computers in Japan are all high priced. I don't know why, maybe less people buy computers, so they increase price to compensate.
I live in the suburbs of Tokyo. It's cheaper for me to order my electronics from the states, than it is to buy it from Japan. Be it brick and mortar or ordering online. I have an APO box, so no taxes or high shipping prices.
Pretty much any electronics cost more. Computers, tvs, portable speakers, headphones, etc cost more when compared to US prices. I have a Sony SRS-XB32 Bluetooth speakers. $100 USD in the states. 20,000 yen ($183 USD) in Japan.
I'm loving all the connectivity, I still have and use my Vaio z13. That said, I feel like 1920x1080 is a bit high for a 12.5" panel, I really enjoy the 1600x900 on my z13, and I absolutely hate scaling or high DPI modes. 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is just flat out bullshit. My old Z13 has 8GB of RAM. Hell, my old Dell Precision M4400 has 8GB of RAM. Also, I'd much, much, much rather have Ice Lake with the better GPU than Comet Lake with 6 cores. It would also fit the spirit of the Vaio Z series better.. they had power in all areas.
!6:10 14 inch screen with 1080p resolution is as small as any laptop should go. the 13.5-inch dell xps is stretching it too, but anything smaller you need to use DPI scaling for even a 1080p screen. So I don't get why anyone would want to buy anything smaller. It is akin to someone wanting to buy a sub 1080P screen, who wants to use a 720P screen?

I'd like to see the benchmarks comparing the 4 and 6 core versions in this package, that would be interesting.yeeeeman - Tuesday, January 28, 2020 - link

Any of these comet lake cpus dip into triple digit base clocks?yeeeeman - Tuesday, January 28, 2020 - link
Probably, if you start doing video editing on it. For the target users on the other hand, these will do just fine with bursts over 3Ghz...shabby - Tuesday, January 28, 2020 - link

LPDDR3 sounds suspicious and likely incorrect, no? Does the controller even support LPDDR3?lmcd - Tuesday, January 28, 2020 - link
Whelp ARK says it doesn't even support LPDDR4 or LPDDR4X, only LPDDR3 and DDR4, so that's out as far as accurate sources go.yeeeeman - Tuesday, January 28, 2020 - link
Comet Lake supports LPDDR3.sorten - Tuesday, January 28, 2020 - link

Still plenty of busines users with VGA projectors and VGA monitors. Moving from VGA has been notoriously slow.Tams80 - Saturday, February 1, 2020 - link

That's between $1800-$2200 USD. I actually like the port selection (other than VGA), but that's too much for a laptop with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.Also, what's up with the space bar? It looks like it's only about a third of the size of a normal one. Is that the standard Japanese layout?

~250 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM. Who buys that? This is good to give a speech or something. But thats basically it.
