Are Xeons still locked to the server chipset?
  • Operandi - Tuesday, May 5, 2020 - link

I doubt that has changed. I'm not sure if its still the case or not but I know in the past certain i3's supported ECC and other Xeon like features. I would guess that this board is aimed at niche cases like that but thats only a guess.

ASRock Rack also make a Ryzen AM4 mATX board that looks similar. That would probably make much more sense for most use cases.

    ASRock Rack?

Not going with ASRack feels like a missed opportunity. :P

Without ECC ram I wouldn't use them for hosting my grot collection, never mind something I intend to make money out of.

You can tell how full of grot someone is by the amount of conviction they put in something they obviously don't understand. I mean I get the "principle" of wanting ECC but let's be honest here, *you* don't *need* it. Neither do most of the regular users out there. Pretty much no home computer, laptop, tablet, or phone has it because it's a nice to have in those cases, not a need. So just go address a real need and put your grot collection where you need it: on your upper lip.

And before you say anything, I know it's a "server-focused model" and should have more server bells and whistles, not just a desktop board in disguise. I was just addressing the offensive way in which you decided to tell everyone you're 16 and even your shit is "important" and since you heard ECC is cool to have you suddenly can't take a fart without one. Sorry, keep your "grot collection" on one.

ECC would require a different chipset. That could potentially remove some features here (remember not all info is released yet) and it would slow it down. If this is intended for HFT pure speed maters most. It would also cost more, but that likely wont matter to intended buyers.

"This will likely support Intel's Xeon range of 10th generation processors, but we can't confirm that at this time."
Unless Intel has made an abrubt about-face, suddenly allowing Xeon processors to again function on desktop chipsets, this is patently false.

I buy ASRock Rack boards because it’s high quality PCBs, short trace lines, etc.
Still have a pair of H97/Z97 mATX boards w/ i7 4790k’s running strong after non stop use for 5/6 years.

Bought their W480 and the Z490 because of price drops as AMD takes more market share.

I’ll be years behind the new systems but won’t sweat app compatibility and definitely enjoy the cheap prices. The 1250P/W480 was 30% off and the i7 10700k’s will be coming down even more after Rocket Lake.

Love the M1 Apple and AMD 5000’s. Might even buy some in a couple years.
