Thanks for a great review. Based on this one, I went to some other sites like dpreview.com, checked out lots of sample pictures etc. against competitors like the D70 and decided to take the plunge. All I can say is, this camera's fantastic. It's easy even for a relative newbie like me to get up to speed and take really great pictures.
Now I have a great camera with which to take pictures of my first child. Thanks again.
#23, Unfortunately, since the digicam section is still relatively new, we don't have a lot of places to get products right now (lenses). We have been able to do Canon SLR reviews simply because we already have lenses. Don't worry, we are planning on covering the new Nikon DSLRs as soon as we can get them.
I've got to add to the calls for a Nikon DSLR review. It's a pretty glaring omission given the reviews of the Canon 300D, 20D, and 350D, but no Nikon. The D70 is a fantastic camera, far better than the 300D for marginally more money. The D50 will provide even better value. Isn't reviewing only Canon DSLRs sort of like reviewing only Nvidia GPU's or Intel processors?
The battery life stated here seems to be a little off. I will have to test, but I dont believe my camera has anywhere close to the stated battery life.
Nice review. I decided on the 20D over the 350 because of the size, feel, and the controls. The wheel in the back of the 20D is so much better than the controls on the 350. I am sure picture quality is close.

that's the coolest thing - when you're in clock mode, if you swiftly move the camera, it will change the color of the clock.
From what I've read, the viewfinder on the XT is even smaller than the tiny one I have on my 300D. I also own a Canon film SLR, and the viewfinder in that is freaking huge compared to the one in my 300D. When you have a wide-aperture lens (larger than f2.8), then you will want a large viewfinder to see if you are focusing correctly, otherwise it is very easy to get the focus plane locked with the narrow depth of field.
#13: if the XT is like my 300D, then that rattling sound is the part of the camera that determines if you are holding the camera vertically or horizontally. It is normal.
That's probably the sensor that tracks if the camera is vertical or horizontal. It's used to determine how you want a vertical image to be displayed on the LCD.
I have a question to XT owners. I have noticed last night when holding my camera, that there seems to be something loose inside. I was just moving it up and down in my hands trying out different angles when I noticed what seems like something is moving around inside. The camera was brand new when I got it, and packed very nicely, and certainly has not been dropped or exposed to any shock at all. I was wondering if you guys have it too?
I agree about the noise, there seems to be something loose in the camera. Mine is brand new and has not been subjected to any shock. I've been practicing using it and never noticed anything for the first six days. It is very quiet at times when I am practicing but I have never noticed a sound until the sixth night. I was using a "long exposer time" and after that I noticed a sound everytime I tilted the camera back and forth. I can even feel it as I move it. Everything seems to work the same. I can't figure out why I didn't notice it before. I was ready to return it but decided to check on the web to see what others have experienced. You are the second person to mention this so far as I have just began my search.

you know, everytime you do a camera review, I end up using at least one of the pictures on my computer... your stop sign from the first guide to taking photos if my picture on my xanga site, and now the nihgt time picture of the building in long exposure has just replaced my desktop!

I just bought a Rebel XT a few days ago, but can't use it cause I'm waiting for my CF card lol. Anyways nice review, I am glad I got the camera, can't wait to take some pictures!!!
I'm a Nikon D70 fan myself (I own one). I'll admit, Canon has made a great camera for the price here. If you already own Canon glass, it's a great entry level pro-sumer digital camera, or a great backup camera. If you don't already have an investment of lenses however, I think the Nikon D50, D70, or D70S is a better bargain. The D70 is a difficult camera to beat without spending a LOT of dough. Very good review of the 350D though, thanks.
