It's not like downloading and installing software from a website is hard. If what you're saying is that technologically illiterate users will use the default browser and mail client, well, that's pretty much how things are now.
Although you say that jokingly, I don't think it is beyond plausibility for a future version of the OS to disallow the installation of non-app store apps. They already do it with their other platforms, and now that they are moving everything to their app store, I think it is just a matter of time.
The most content users stay within the walled garden of iOS. The most attempts I've seen at preventing jailbreak are usually when it's a vector for a worm.
I think Apple realizes people don't want restrictions, look at their DRM-free catalog of music. However, based on what we've seen from iOS it's plausible that they may someday try to restrict OS X to Apple approved software via the App Store. If that happens, that will be my last day as an Apple customer. Right now I'm a Desktop PC - Apple Laptop guy, and quite happy with that choice.
It's possible that Microsoft and Apple might try to push an App Store only approach some day. But even if that day comes, I don't see Google or Linux adopting such a harsh policy. Stand behind the little guys if you want to prevent things like this from becoming the norm.
How would they differentiate between non-app store apps and programs people are developing themselves? I've read that you have to pay $100 to install your own iphone app on a physical iphone (which is why most software developers go for other phones). Surely Apple won't want to put people off writing programs on their Macs with a similar policy?

It's not iOS stuff, its just big icons. They got rid of the menu bar at the top and increased icon size and act like its some great new feature. What is the difference between launch pad and making the regular OSX icons bigger?
Well first of the icons aren't any larger than they are in the app stack showed in grid view. There is however a whole lot more space. It also have pages instead of scrolling as well as what i presume most people would say are more beautiful folders.

You are guessing wrong that Launchpad will only show apps you purchased in the App Store. In the current developer preview every app on your Mac no matter its source is shown in Launchpad. I have no reason to believe that Apple will change that – why should they?
While I tread the App Store, resize from every edge and the decision to sell the OS Update for $29 are good decisions.
And if Mail is really improved, not just iOS ook alike, that would be a good thing. With improvement I mean the ability to connect to IMAP servers that are not only off the narrow ilk that Mail can auto firgure out and some decent error messages for what is going on. Or some good search feature.
Or how about improving iCal so that it does delete Events that are deleted in the exchange server. Or the reminder dialog in a less intrusive spot than smack in the middle of my screen.

Most non-mac-users aren't aware, but Disk Utility provides the means to rip installation media (DVDs in MBP, USB sticks in MBA's case) to an Apple Disk Image file (.dmg), and go in the opposite direction to a piece of media (SD card, DVD, USB stick).
I imagine Apple to offer the Apple Disk Image through the app-store, much like how they offer X-Code. And by current capabilities, for that image to be burnable to bootable media, if one couldn't run the installer from within the OS already.
It will be on a DVD for the systems with optical drives and for those without likely on an 8GB USB flash drive. While cost prohibitive to sell an 4GB USB flash drives to 10s of millions of Mac users just for an OS upgrade it makes perfect sense to roll the expense into the cost of the new Macs that are without ODDs, which is a growing trend will soon also include the MBP lineup.
Isn't that basically what Apple's always done, a cheap upgrade from the latest version of the OS, but full price from older versions? Or am I remembering that incorrectly?
Wow! Forget being subtle. Apples is not giving its fan base many options for loading software on to macs. The level of CONTROL apples is wielding over its consumers is growing by the hour. I could be wrong, but you *should* be covered. There are a lot of older Core 2 Duo Macs without 64-bit kernel boot support/EFI that support the new OS just fine.

I'm not too bothered by Apple's desire to focus people on the App store, it's a good move for the average consumer as long as they never go too far in that direction (and completely block other forms of software install for advanced users).
Frankly, Steve's quotes about file system scared me far more than their intentions with the App store, there's nothing inherently wrong w/the existing file system... If there's one concept of modern PCs that's easy to understand it's files and folders for pete's sake. Doing away with it would cripple an OS way more than limiting what software you can or can't install. They didn't do anything about this on Lion, but he clearly stated his intentions, he'd like it to be entirely like iOS, ugh.
P.S. Hasn't file version'ing been part of Windows for a while? At 'least since Vista no? AFAIK Windows Office suites have had auto-save enabled by default (without any prompts) for years as well... It sure isn't as slick as the Versions/Time Machine combo tho, but all of it is still predicated on people buying that second hard drive and enabling the backup features, too bad they can't force people to actually do that. :p
Well, they *can't* get rid of it, what they're aiming for is to *hide* it. If you've used an iphone, you'll realise you don't actually need direct file system access to use it.. which gets rid of a lot of complexity and general messing around with stuff that turns out to be unnecessary.
For the mac, I think the terminal is a good example of where they might go. Most users don't want or need access to the underlying unix system, so they never see it. Fire up the terminal though, and you have full access. They could do the same with the file system, make it work like the iphone where you don't *need* the finder, so most users won't touch it, but it's there if you do. Just the same as the app store being the default, but other options are there for those of us who know what we're doing.
I think this is good, for anyone technical it's still a very powerful OS, but it gets easier to do the simple stuff, and you get even fewer support calls from friends + relatives who don't care what the technical bits do, they just want a browser and a way to write emails and letters.
Hi Guys and Gals - If this is download only, is it going to possible to make a Hackintosh still?
I have a x58 system I was going to install 10.5 on, but not got around to it yet. Now I guess I'd be 10.6 if I was going to, but I am unsure how this would now work. Do I need to buy 10.5 and then upgrade? Or is it just download to an existing machine and burn the stand-alone 10.6 disk. Either way, I have a suspicion Apple's servers won't let me download from them if the connection doesn't come from a registered Apple machine. Any thoughts?

yea, doesn't fill up the screen so i isn't using the space as efficiently.The stack icons are even bigger in that image...
It just looks better overall, add to that the multi-touch gestures for it, don't know how you can't see it being an improvement...

So, in effect, if you're on OSX 10.5.x, you'll have to pay $29x2 to get to Lion?$29 - 10.6, so you can use Apple Mac App Store, since it's not compatible with 10.5.x
